All About the Paleo Diet

What is the Paleo diet?

While based off the diets from Paleothietc era 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago, the Paleo diet most certainly is not a blast from the past.

You might have heard of the paleo diet, but under its other names. People commonly call it the caveman diet, hunter-gatherer diet, or Stone age diet.

The diet revolves around lean meats, fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, and seeds. These were things easily accessible to those in the Paleothic area because they were hunters and gathers. It was an era pre-farming, so the foods are limited to those that are not cultivated via agriculture processes; examples of foods not allowed are dairy products, legumes, and grains- such as wheat or corn.

The hypothesis that drives the paleo diet is that modern farming practices have introduced humans to foods that are genetically different than those our genetics are adapted to. Our ancestors ate foods that weren't cultivated, but that were gathered and hunted. Farming changed this and it is believed that our bodies thus lost the ability to adapt to these new foods fully; according to an article from Mayo Clinic, this lead to the prevalence of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity today.

The Paleo diet differs from the Keto diet (known for being carb-free) as it encourages the eating high-complex carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes and fruits. Because it is a hunter-gatherer based diet, some people believe they can eat all meat and no vegetables on this diet. This is a common misconception about the Paleo diet. While lean meats and fish are encourage on this diet, to reap the full Paleo diet benefits, you need to actually consume 60% to 70% vegetables and fruits on this diet. This is why the diet is nutrient dense because you are eating nutrient filled foods, with many health benefits, that keep you full longer.
